The sort of people who would buy a Counterfeit Mac are the same sort of people who would eat a chicken salad sandwich they found on the floor of a truck stop men’s room. Apple doesn’t need or want their business. And if people like Paolo worked harder, instead of sitting around all day drinking Cerveza, then they too could feel what it’s like to own a quality product.

It’s a good smart idea.
What they could also do is relegate the low end machines to only work with the previous generation OS (Leopard vs. Snow Leopard).

But…Job’s is a snob. The Ipad is his sad shot at the netbook crowd (forget the low end PC crowd).
And, of course, it’s priced at almost twice the cost of a netbook.

I love apple and wish them well.
But like Detroit, they’re leaving money on the table to protect their expensive gas guzzlers.
There is a recession on. We’ll see.

I wish they would do this. At my grammar school we just tried to purchase a fleet of new computers from Apple. But the quote that we got on the Mac Mini was too high compared to the PC’s we went with. It’s too bad since we all wanted Macs. But the price difference was too hard to justify to the board.

This strategy would guarantee Apple as an also-ran. MS has fleeced the licensed OS model and shown it’s flaws in user satisfaction, stability, security and productivity. Emulating it would render MacOS equally impotent and makes no sense.

A better approach would be to redesign the PC category, as Apple did in 1984 with the Mac, and this time ensure it’s (iPhone)OS patents are in place and they have a $40bn army of lawyers to prevent MS/Google et al stealing years of development as they did in 1992. i.e. create a market where no competitor can follow – though they probably want to avoid releasing it in France as there they see protecting what you own unlawful.
